BC PORCH Cooking Club first meeting is on 8/15

We are starting a cooking club to test recipes in the best selling book,  Eat Well on $4/day: Good and Cheap by Leanne Brown.  You can check out the book here by pressing the title link and get a free .pdf copy of the book.  Leanne designed the healthy recipes to fit the budgets of people living on SNAP, the US program that used to be called food stamps. The beneficiaries of SNAP get a little more than $4 per person, per day to spend on food.  The book offers useful ideas for everyone who cooks on a budget.  Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, August 15th at 7 pm at the Briar Chapel Clubhouse.  Please join us!  RSVP to briarchapel@porchcommunities.org.

Thank you!

BC PORCH collected 1490 pounds of food and $230 this month!

We collected 1490 pounds of food from our neighbors’ porches, from our new box at the Breakaway restaurant and from a donation at the 501 Pharmacy! Han, the owner at 501, was thrilled to have a collection at his store.

We collected $230 in donations between the Great Meadow Picnic (sponsored by Eamon Breen) and individual donations. Some people donate money through the CORA food pantry website or PORCH website. CORA and PORCH are working on a way for us to identify those monetary donations coming from the Briar Chapel area. Let me know of your donation directly, if you please.

I picked up some new signs from the PORCH head office yesterday. I will deliver them to those of you who offered to post a sign in your yard.

Thank you to our wonderful neighbors and wonderful volunteers! It was fun!

First Annual Great Meadow Picnic supports BC PORCH

Briar Chapel resident, Eamon Breen, sponsored a Great Meadow Picnic Event in Briar Chapel to benefit BC PORCH last weekend. Attendees enjoyed listening to music performed by jazz band, Vintage Vibe Trio, while they snacked on picnics and items from food and beer truck vendors. Kids enjoyed face painting and playing around a fire truck.

Eamon designated that proceeds from a 50/50 raffle be donated to Briar Chapel PORCH and CORA Food Pantry. However, those proceeds grew from 50% to 100% because the winner of the 50/50 raffle was very generous and donated her portion of the prize to the BC PORCH cause. The total amount of money donated was $200!

We offer many thanks to Eamon and our anonymous 50/50 donor!

Get ready for the next BC PORCH date on Friday, June 15th!

Briar Chapel PORCH 2018 Pick Up Dates

Happy New Year!  We had fantastic year in 2017!  We donated over 20,000 pounds of food and over $650 to the local CORA food pantry.  We are currently updating our website.  In the mean time, here is a post of the most needed items for the CORA food pantry, and a table of our 2018 BRIAR CHAPEL PORCH (BC PORCH) pickup dates. CORA also welcomes donations of fresh fruit, vegetables and spices.

BC PORCH  is conducted on the 3rd Friday of every month, with the exception of December this year.  December BC PORCH will occur on the 2nd Friday of the month.    We also collect items for the local animal shelter three times per year (*see POOCH dates).  In addition, BC PORCH supports some of our other neighborhood drives.  In 2017, we donated school supplies to the local middle school in August.  In December, we helped collect books for the Briar Chapel Chatham Reads campaign that is sponsored by the Chatham Education Foundation.  We also conducted two storytelling events to “give back” to our wonderful neighbors.  Dr. Brian Sturm and the UNC Story Squad volunteered their time for the storytelling events.  Breakaway Cafe allowed us to use their restaurant space for one of the those events.  Thanks to all for helping to reduce hunger for some of our less fortunate Chatham County residents!  BC PORCH will achieve even more in 2018!

We appreciate any size donation.  Please place your donation bag on the bottom steps of your front porch.  A neighbor will pick it up for delivery to the food pantry.  Please no glass containers.
